The EPL Story
To address the need for clear regulatory guidance on conduct of research, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations in December of 1978, with an effective date of June 1979 to allow the industry to attain compliance.
In April of 1978, several months before the FDA published the final GLP regulations and more than one year before the FDA GLP regulations became effective, EPL Archives (EPL) was founded by two well-respected and prominent pathologists in the scientific research industry: Dr. William Busey and Dr. John Ferrell.
Dr. Busey and Dr. Ferrell were true pioneers in the research field who understood the value of properly preserving and maintaining biomaterials and related data. These founders believed that the combination of specialized, purpose-built facilities, equipment, innovative Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and well-trained biorepository specialists would produce optimal preservation of research materials. They set about developing the original managed biorepository services company, which met or exceeded all of the emerging regulatory requirements.
Drs. Busey and Ferrell also realized that having a large archiving / biorepository partner whose sole purpose was to provide regulatory-compliant services for the industry not only allowed optimal preservation of research materials, it provided scale, which meant services could be delivered at a cost far less than any single public or private organization could attain internally.
EPL Archives’ current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Samuel Busey, joined the EPL Archives team in 1988. Under Dr. Busey’s leadership EPL Archives has grown exponentially and today is recognized as an industry leader in providing trusted managed biorepository services and solutions worldwide.
